Road freight costs are directly influenced by the distances that transportation equipment must travel between origins and destinations. These distances can be represented spatially, as shown in Figure 1.
Road distances in the State of São Paulo
In Figure 1, the color bands change every 100 kilometers and represent road distances measured from a reference location, in this example, Piracicaba (SP). As the distance from the reference point increases, the colors become progressively darker.

Road Distances in the State of São Paulo for Different Origin–Destination Points
By adding new origin or destination points, shown in blue in Figure 2, it becomes easy to identify the distance between these locations and the reference point in Piracicaba.

Applications
This type of analysis can be extended beyond distance measurements to evaluate other transportation-related variables, such as:
- Freight costs
- Travel time
- Distribution costs
- Service coverage areas
- Logistics efficiency
- Market accessibility
Distance maps are valuable tools for logistics planning, transportation management, territory analysis, and decision-making processes involving the movement of goods and services.
Benefits of road distance mapping
Road distance maps help organizations:
- Identify the most accessible markets.
- Optimize distribution networks.
- Evaluate transportation costs.
- Define locations for warehouses and distribution centers.
- Improve route planning.
- Support sales territory management.
- Analyze regional competitiveness.
By transforming transportation data into geographic information, these maps provide a clear visual understanding of how distance influences logistics operations and business performance.
Data Sources and Software
The maps presented in this article were generated using Gismaps Viewer, based on the municipal boundary dataset for the State of São Paulo and road distance data.
