Sales Team Management

The strategies used by sales representatives and account managers should be defined by management and consistently implemented by the sales team.

Maps provide an effective way to understand how sales visits are being conducted and whether field activities are aligned with the company’s commercial objectives. Through geographic visualization, several important questions can be answered:

  • Do the completed visits cover the entire planned sales territory?
  • Is the salesperson respecting the assigned territory, or are they overlapping with other sales territories?
  • What is the effective service radius of the salesperson?
  • Are visits concentrated only in major cities and along primary highways?
  • Based on the visits performed, is the sales territory appropriately sized for the salesperson?

Figure 1 – Map of sales visits conducted

Using a list of cities visited by sales representatives, it is easy to plot visit locations on a map. Symbol sizes can be used to represent the number of visits completed during a specific period, allowing managers to visualize the intensity of commercial activity across the territory.

Maps can be generated using:

  • Monthly visit data
  • Quarterly visit data
  • Annual visit data

Benefits of mapping Sales Activities

Mapping sales visits helps organizations:

  • Monitor sales territory coverage.
  • Identify underserved areas.
  • Detect overlaps between sales territories.
  • Evaluate salesperson productivity.
  • Optimize travel and routing strategies.
  • Improve territory design and management.
  • Support coaching and performance evaluation.

Understanding Sales Coverage Patterns

These geographic representations help reveal the spatial behavior of sales teams and identify patterns in how territories are served.

By comparing the performance and coverage patterns of top-performing sales representatives, organizations can identify best practices and apply them to other territories. This can lead to improved sales coverage, more efficient use of resources, and better overall commercial performance.

Maps transform sales activity data into actionable insights, allowing managers to make more informed decisions about territory management, resource allocation, and sales strategy execution.
