Tips for Creating Great Maps

Today, there are numerous resources and sources of information available to assist with map production. However, creating an outstanding map requires more than simply using software. The recommendations presented below can help improve the quality and effectiveness of your maps.

First, it is important to become familiar with the available mapping software and systems and choose the one that best meets your objectives. There is no single software solution that is ideal for every purpose; the best choice is the one that provides the tools and functionality required for a specific project.

Population representation

Next, it is essential to understand how data and information can be transformed into graphical representations. In Figure 1, for example, the population of Brazil’s Federative Units (States) is represented using symbols whose sizes correspond to population values.

Maps published by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) can serve as excellent references for cartographic design and graphic representation, as they cover a wide range of thematic and geographic subjects.
